The Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA), enacted in 2013, has introduced comprehensive measures to enhance the security and traceability of pharmaceuticals within the United States. While compliance with the DSCSA may initially appear burdensome for pharmacies, which it is, it also offers significant advantages that can transform pharmacy operations and patient safety.

Enhancing Supply Chain Security

The primary objective of the DSCSA is to safeguard the pharmaceutical supply chain against counterfeit, stolen, contaminated, or otherwise harmful drugs. By mandating electronic, interoperable systems for tracing prescription medications at the package level, the DSCSA enables pharmacies to verify the authenticity of drugs and track their journey from manufacturer to dispenser.
